Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans area early morning August 29, 2005.

The storm surge breached the city's levees at multiple points, leaving 80 percent of the city submerged, tens of thousands of victims clinging to rooftops, and hundreds of thousands scattered to shelters around the country.

Three weeks later, Hurricane Rita reflooded much of the area.

It has been a year.....the smell, the taste.... images burned indelibly into my brain.....my soul....

Many animals were trapped in buildings for over a month.

A Rottweiler that subsisted on pigeons for over a month in an abandoned, storm-ravaged house in the city and was so malnourished that its vertebrae and ribs were pressing out against it's fur is among the dogs that we rescued.
This red and white Am. Staff was one of our first "house" rescues, someone had been feeding this dog through a window. He was not happy and didn't want to let us in, he put up quite a fight.

Dr. Mark Johnson, a  consulting veterinarian for the Yellowstone Gray Wolf Restoration Project, and wildlife specialist Linda Thurston, spent some time with a small group of trappers and taught us the art of trapping safetly while showing us how to have  the utmost care and respect for the animal.

This little dog lived in the crushed house in the picture above. We never caught her.

From one end to the other.....devastation and animals needing help. Of course this is New Orleans so hope and humor surface from time to time.
